Listed here are the commonly used acronyms for Skyrim, Skyrim Special Edition and Skyrim VR. This page is intended to allow users who are unfamiliar with the terminology used by the community to quickly understand what is being discussed.

| BP | Bashed Patch | An automatic patch created via Wrye Bash that resolves conflicts based on tags. |
| BSA | Bethesda Softworks Archive | The extension/file format for archives loaded by the game. |
| CBBE | Caliente's Beautiful Bodies Enhancer | A mod by Caliente and Ousnius to overhaul the female character body (NSFW!). |
| CC | Creation Club | Can be used to refer to either the program OR all of the CCC grouped together. |
| CC | Creation Club Content | The mini-DLCs that can be purchased in Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4. |
| CK | Creation Kit | The official modding tools for Skyrim. |
| CTD | Crash to desktop | When the game immediately closes without any error message. |
| DDS | Direct Draw Surface | The image format used by texture assets. |
| ENB | ENB | A program that interfaces with the game rendering engine to allow modification of the game shaders. |
| ESL | Elder Scrolls Light-Master | File extension used by game plugin files, only compatible with Skyrim Special Edition. |
| ESLP | Elder Scrolls Light Plugin | An alternate term for ESP(FE) to indicate an ESP file that has been marked as light. |
| ESM | Elder Scrolls Master | File extension used by game plugin files. |
| ESP | Elder Scrolls Plugin | File extension used by game plugin files. |
| ESP(FE) | Elder Scrolls Plugin FE | A (somewhat illogical) community term for an ESP plugin with the ESL header flag active. |
| FNIS | Fore's New Idles in Skyrim | A tool for generating new animations in Skyrim. |
| FOMOD | FallOut MOD | The name of the mod installer standard used by many mod managers. |
| ILS | Infinite load screen | When the game gets stuck on a loading screen indefinitely. |
| LE | Legendary Edition | The original (2011) version of Skyrim with all DLCs included. |
| LOD | Level of Detail | The amount of detail for distant objects loaded by the game. |
| LOTD | Legacy of the Dragonborn | A mod Icecreamassassin and many others that (primarily) adds a museum in Solitude. |
| NIF | NetImmerse File | The GameByro file format for 3D assets. |
| NPC | Non-Player Character | A character featured in the game who is not controlled by the player. |
| PEX | PEX | A compiled Papyrus script, created by running a PSC file through the compiler. |
| PSC | Papyrus Source Code | An uncompiled Papyrus source code in plain text. |
| SE | Special Edition | The 2016 release of Skyrim Special Edition. |
| SKSE | Skyrim Script Extender | A modding tool for Skyrim (2011) created by Silverlock. |
| SKSE64 | Skyrim Script Extender 64 | A modding tool for Skyrim Special Edition created by Silverlock. |
| SKSEVR | Skyrim Script Extender VR | A modding tool for Skyrim VR created by Silverlock. |
| TES5 | The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim | Contraction of the full game title using the number 5. |
| TESV | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Contraction of the full game title using the roman numeral for 5. |
| USLEEP | Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch | A mod created by Arthmoor and the USLEEP team. |
| USSEP | Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch | A mod created by Arthmoor and the USSEP team. |
| VR | Virtual Reality | Common abbreviation use to refer to Skyrim VR or the VR ecosystem in general. |
| WB | Wrye Bash | A mod management utility for games based on Bethesda's Creation Engine. |
| xEdit | xEdit | Refers to xEdit by Elminster (also know as TESVEdit, TES5Edit, SSEEdit) |
| xSE | x Script Extender | A collective term for Script Extenders for Gamebyro titles. The x can be substituted to complete the full name (SKSE, F4SE, NVSE, etc). |
