How to Install Skyrim Creation Kit
An infernalryan Skyrim Modding Guide
This guide covers the available methods for installing the Skyrim Creation Kit, including version selection, configuration, and usage notes. Optional enhancements to improve stability, along with compatibility guidance for all supported versions, are also included. It covers both Skyrim SE/AE (Steam only) and Skyrim VR. GOG and other platforms do not support the Creation Kit.
The Mod Manager Fundamentals guides below cover basic modding concepts and processes that may be helpful while following this guide. Feel free to continue and return here later if anything is unclear.

🧠IMPORTANT NOTE – In this guide, there are several references to your 📁[🐉Skyrim] folder as well as your Skyrim 📁[🐉Data] folder. These are special folders (denoted by brackets and a dragon icon) that refer to your specific root Skyrim game folder and its 📁Data folder inside. For example, if you install Skyrim into 🖥️C:\Games\Steam, 📁[🐉Skyrim] would refer to 🖥️C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition, and 📁[🐉Data] would refer to 🖥️C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data (NOTE – your folders may be different).
This section provides important background information before installing the Creation Kit. It explains what it is, why this guide recommends a managed installation over the default Steam installation, and important VR compatibility information. If you're already familiar with the topics covered in this section, feel free to skim for anything new or useful, or ⏩️Skip to section 2 to continue.
The Creation Kit (CK) is Bethesda's official modding tool for Skyrim. It is used to create and edit plugins, worldspaces, quests, NPCs, objects, and many other aspects of the game. Even if you don't plan to create mods, certain modding tools and processes—such as regenerating grass bounds for grass cache generation with NGIO—require the Creation Kit to perform these tasks.
While it is possible in some cases to install the Creation Kit directly through Steam, this is only practical if you are using the latest version of Skyrim Special Edition. Older Skyrim installations, including SSE 1.5.97 and Skyrim VR, require different runtime files in order to launch the latest Creation Kit than they do to launch the game itself. Because these files must be managed separately, this guide recommends managing the entire Creation Kit through your mod manager instead. This approach keeps the game installation isolated while allowing the appropriate files to be enabled only when the Creation Kit is in use. While both installation methods are covered, this is the recommended approach.
Although Bethesda never released a dedicated version of the Creation Kit for Skyrim VR, the SSE Creation Kit can still be used. Users who own SSE can use the latest version of the Creation Kit, while those that do not must use an older version with additional compatibility considerations. The installation steps in the following section cover the required prerequisites and the appropriate setup for each configuration.
This section covers the available methods for installing the Creation Kit, along with any required prerequisites. It also includes the initial setup required within your chosen mod manager, where applicable.
⏩️Skip to section 2.2 if you already have the Creation Kit added to your Steam library, otherwise, proceed.
The steps below guide you through installing the Creation Kit using one of the supported installation methods.
🔢Section Options:
🔍Review the listed options below. Choose only one and follow its steps (↕️Expand the 📜Instructions block).
If you are running the latest version of Skyrim Special Edition only (1.6.1170 at the time of writing), you can install the Creation Kit directly through Steam. This installs the latest version and is the simplest method for compatible setups. From your Steam library, locate Skyrim Special Edition: Creation Kit and select Install. ⤵️Proceed to section 3 when done.
This method uses the Steam Depot to download the Creation Kit, which is then installed as a managed mod within your mod manager. Although it requires a few additional setup steps, it is the recommended installation method for all game versions. This process is required for Skyrim VR users and is by far the best approach for users who have downgraded Skyrim Special Edition.
⏩️Skip to section 2.2.2.2 if you are NOT using MO2, or already have Root Builder installed, otherwise, follow the steps below (↕️Expand the 📜Instructions block). Unlike Vortex, MO2 does not have the native ability to manage files in the 📁[🐉Skyrim] folder, only the 📁[🐉Data] folder. This functionality is provided by the Root Builder plugin, allowing you to leave the entire 📁[🐉Skyrim] folder in pristine, vanilla condition! All the remaining steps for MO2 in this guide assume this is installed.
The steps below guide you through downloading the appropriate version of the Creation Kit using the Steam console, as well as any other requirements.

Run each command for the applicable option below and wait for it to complete before starting the next! You will know it is done when you see a message that includes Depot download complete, followed by the download location. Be sure to note this location for later use!
⚠️Additional step: If you are NOT running the latest version of Skyrim Special Edition (including VR users with SSE), you will also need to download files from the latest depot 489832 as well:
The steps below prepare the downloaded files for installation and management through your chosen mod manager.
⏩️Skip to section 2.2.2.4 if you do NOT own Skyrim Special Edition, or are running the latest version of SSE and thus did NOT have to download depot 489832 in the previous section, otherwise, proceed.
⏩️Skip to section 2.2.2.5 if you own Skyrim Special Edition, otherwise, follow the steps below (↕️Expand the 📜Instructions block). If you are a Skyrim VR user and do NOT own Skyrim Special Edition, you MUST perform this Creation Kit downgrade and install Creation Kit Platform Extended later in this guide to enable support for Skyrim's newer 1.71 plugin header format. Without this support, legacy versions of the Creation Kit cannot load or work with many modern plugins. As a result, certain operations, including regenerating grass bounds, are not possible if any required plugins use the newer header format. Although the downloaded version of the Creation Kit (1.6.438) works with Skyrim VR, it is not compatible with CKPE, which is why a downgrade to supported version 1.5.73 is required.
The next step is to import this folder into your mod manager.
🧩Mod Manager-Specific Steps:
The steps below depend on the mod manager chosen. Choose only one option and follow its steps (↕️Expand the 📜Instructions block).
), right-click the entry and select Ignore missing data – Since we are using Root Builder, and no 📁Data folder exists inside the mod, MO2 may complain about this, even though it is configured properly. Performing this step will fix that. The following additional mods improve stability, performance, and overall usability of the Creation Kit.
This section guides you through installation and setup of the Creation Kit Platform Extended (CKPE). It is REQUIRED for Skyrim VR users who do not own Skyrim Special Edition, and is recommended for anyone else looking to use the Creation Kit for more than occasional tasks like grass bounds regeneration. It provides a collection of usability, stability, and functionality improvements, making it a worthwhile addition for anyone intending to spend significant time working in the Creation Kit. If this is not of interest to you, feel free to ⏩️Skip to section 3.2.

), right-click the entry and select Ignore missing data – Since we are using Root Builder, and no 📁Data folder exists inside the mod, MO2 may complain about this, even though it is configured properly. Performing this step will fix that.⏩️Skip to section 3.3 if you are NOT a Skyrim VR user, are using the original Skyrim VR 1.4.15 masters (not SSE masters or the USSEP upgrade patch), or already have the appropriate mod below installed, otherwise, proceed. In addition to providing the correct string files for the Creation Kit, the mod below also resolves in-game issues and inconsistencies that can occur when incorrect string files are used (for example, missing lockpicks). It also includes properly merged translation files, restoring Skyrim VR-specific interface text that would otherwise appear as unresolved string identifiers when using files taken directly from updated SSE masters. Be sure to select the version that matches your updated game masters.
The following mods should not be installed because they are incompatible, outdated, or have been superseded by other mods or better alternatives. Unless otherwise noted, any mods that list these as requirements should also be avoided. When finished reviewing this list, ⤵️Proceed to section 4.
Incompatible. This mod uses an older patching approach and should not be installed alongside CK Platform Extended.
Superseded. Completely replaced by CK Platform Extended, which continues its development and significantly expands its functionality.
Outdated. Many commonly recommended INI tweaks predate CK Platform Extended and modern Creation Kit versions, making them no longer applicable.
Outdated. As a general rule, other Creation Kit mods or patches that have not been updated in five or more years are likely outdated and no longer recommended.
This section guides you through the final setup required before using the Creation Kit. It covers configuring the executable within your mod manager, verifying that everything launches correctly, and completing the one-time CK Platform Extended setup, where applicable. Finally, notes are provided on launching the Creation Kit and managing its installation based on your specific setup.
This section covers setting up the Creation Kit executable in Vortex or MO2.
✋NOTICE – The steps in this section for configuring executables in Vortex and MO2 below are abbreviated, as the full process is covered in my Mod Manager Fundamentals guides (🔗Vortex/🔗MO2). Refer to those guides if you need additional guidance when completing those steps.
🧩Mod Manager-Specific Steps:
The steps below depend on the mod manager chosen. Choose only one option and follow its steps (↕️Expand the 📜Instructions block).
Next we're going to verify that the Creation Kit launches correctly and complete the first-time initialization of CK Platform Extended, if applicable.
✋NOTICE – While performing validation in this section, if the Creation Kit appears to start but no window ever opens, the most common cause is using an incorrect version of 📄steam_api64.dll. Refer to ⬇️section 5.1 (F.A.Q.) below to verify that no instructions were missed. If you're still unable to launch the Creation Kit after revisiting required steps, feel free to leave a comment.
This section covers general usage instructions and any steps required before launching the Creation Kit or Skyrim, where applicable.
Below you will find an F.A.Q., links to my other modding guides, and the revision history for this document.
See below for answers to frequently-asked questions.
Q: The Creation Kit appears to launch but never loads and no window ever opens
A: This is likely caused by not including the 📄steam_api64.dll file from the latest version of Skyrim Special Edition in your Creation Kit mod folder, as described in the ⚠️Additional Step for Option 1 in ⬆️section 2.2.2.2 (Download files). Please refer to that section for the file download and then ⬆️section 2.2.2.3.2 (SSE runtime files) for inclusion in your mod folder. This file is required to support the latest version of the Creation Kit if you own Skyrim Special Edition and you are using a downgraded version of Skyrim (e.g., 1.5.97) or Skyrim VR.
Q: I receive a warning that a MASTERFILE is a higher version than this EXE can load, and then an error indicating the file cannot be found, which prevents the application from loading
A: You must install 🔗Creation Kit Platform Extended (CKPE). This error occurs when using a version of the Creation Kit older than 1.6.1130 without CKPE. Plugins created for Skyrim Special Edition 1.6.1130 and later use header version 1.71, which older versions of the Creation Kit cannot read. CKPE adds support for the newer plugin format, allowing these plugins to be loaded. This guide covers all supported configurations that enable compatibility with the newer plugin header format when using older versions of the Creation Kit.
Q: I receive a bunch of warnings when launching the Creation Kit, but the program does eventually load
A: This is normal and expected. The Creation Kit displays numerous warnings while loading plugins, many of which are present in Bethesda's own files. When prompted while loading the vanilla game files, selecting Yes to All is the recommended and expected behavior. The Creation Kit will suppress repeated warning dialogs during loading and continue opening normally. Users who plan to do extensive plugin development may prefer to leave these warnings enabled while troubleshooting their own work.
Q: Why can't I use the latest version of the Creation Kit if I only own Skyrim VR?
A: The latest version of the Creation Kit also requires the 📄steam_api64.dll file from the latest version of Skyrim Special Edition to run. Because this file is only included with SSE, users who own Skyrim VR but not SSE won't be able to launch the latest version (it won't start). Fortunately, Creation Kit 1.5.73, when used alongside 🔗Creation Kit Platform Extended, provides the compatibility required for Skyrim VR and modern plugins and should be sufficient for most users. If you require features introduced in newer versions of the Creation Kit, or plan to develop mods more extensively, obtaining Skyrim Special Edition is highly recommended.
