The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was originally released on 11th November 2011 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Skyrim is the fifth instalment in the Elder Scrolls series and is set approximately 200 years after the previous game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
On 28th October 2016, Bethesda release a remastered version of the game known as Skyrim Special Edition for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. This version features some notable improvements including improved graphics, enhanced lighting and access to Bethesda.net mods from the main menu. At the time of release, Skyrim Special Edition was offered as a free upgrade to anyone who owned the Legendary Edition of the 2011 release or had purchased all 3 DLCs.
A further version of Skyrim for Virtual Reality (VR) headsets was released on 3rd April 2018 and is commonly known as “Skyrim VR”. The VR build includes a reworked user interface and movement controls optimised for use with all popular VR headsets.
The game's main story revolves around the player character, the Last Dragonborn, on their quest across the Northern province of Tamriel (Skyrim) to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. Over the course of the game, the player will become involved in a bloody civil war between the Stormcloaks and the Imperial Legion for control of the region, a conflict which has been preventing either faction from addressing the return of dragons.
